GP Referrals
Home | GP Referrals
Collins St Plastic Surgery welcomes referrals from General Practitioners and medical specialists for assessment and management of plastic and reconstructive conditions.
When is a GP Referral Required?
A valid referral from a GP or specialist is required in the following circumstances:
- When cosmetic surgery consultation is required under current Medical Board of Australia guidelines
- When the patient is seeking consultation for a medically indicated or reconstructive procedure
- When a Medicare rebate is to be claimed
- When private health insurance benefits may apply
Referrals from general practitioners are generally valid for 12 months from the date of issue and 3 months if issued by another specialist.
Cosmetic Surgery Referrals
Under current AHPRA and Medical Board of Australia guidelines, patients seeking cosmetic surgery must first obtain a referral from a GP.
The referring GP is required to conduct an independent assessment and provide written confirmation of suitability for specialist consultation.
These regulatory requirements are designed to support appropriate screening, informed consent, and patient safety.
